Embu: Five die after drinking illicit brew

Five people have died after allegedly taking illicit brew in Karuku village in Mwea ward Mbeere South Subcounty in Embu county.

According to some reports by police one of the deceased had received his contribution of Ksh35,000 in a merry-go-round that they run with his friends and they went on a drinking spree.

Mbeere South Subcounty police commander Gregory Mutiso said he is only aware of three people who have died noting that they had travelled to masinga in Machakos for fun.

“I know only three people who have died we have taken samples of the alcohol they reportedly consumed for examination,” Mutiso noted.

He noted they are investigating whether there might be an element of poisoning adding a fresh twist that the deceased might have consumed crocodile meat which may have turned on them.

ASTU officer kills police inspector over alcohol bill in Kitale

An Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) police officer Robert Mungei Nyakeri is being held at Kitale police station for killing an inspector of police – Kwanza Sub-County Police Commander has confirmed.

Kwanza Sub-County Police Commander James Odera said the two police officers Nyakeri and the deceased Joseph Wanyangu quarrelled at a local entertainment joint over unpaid alcohol bills.

“One of our comrades working with the Anti-Stock Theft Unit in Chepchoina who was on a pass-leave went to a local pub for a drink. In the process, the waiter told him to clear his unpaid bills to be served. The officer did not want to pay his bill. On the intervention of the Inspector, the ASTU officer pushed him, leading to a fight and throwing of beer bottles” Odera said.

Suspected Al-Shabaab militants stop bus, lecture passengers for 2 hours

Travellers heading to Mandera town were held hostage by suspected Al-Shabaab militants on Wednesday and lectured for two hours, according to a report filed at the Kotulo Police Station.

Police said an unknown number of heavily armed Al-Shabaab militants stopped an Al-Mukaram company passenger bus at Lag Mata Kuta, between Dabacity and Dimu hill, and ordered passengers out.

They “searched for non-locals for more than two hours. The bus was heading to Mandera from Nairobi,” the report said.

After thoroughly searching for non-locals in vain, they gave a long speech in Somali language which most of the passengers didn’t comprehend.”

All the travellers were released and proceeded on their trip. They arrived safely in Mandera later in the day.

Security officers at roadblocks have since been directed not to allow any non-local to travel on the B9 road between Kotulo and Elwak.
